Echinopsis Peruvianus

Echinopsis Peruvianus, also known as the Peruvian Torch, is very similar to the San Pedro cactus and comes from the same region, the high mountain deserts of Peru and Ecuador.

There is some controversy about the denomination of this cactus, for some experts it is nothing more than a variation of Trichocereus (more recently the scientific community has reached a certain consensus that it is actually an Echinopsis and not Trichocereus) more typical of an area than of a specific genetics, while for other experts it is a different species of San Pedro. The San Pedro Peruvianus available at Edabea come from the Peruvian Chan Chan valley. Sometimes it is not easy to distinguish between them, as the differences between them can be marked not only by genetics, but also by the specific microclimate of each place, the nutrients in the soil, the altitude, the ultraviolet rays, the frequency of watering, etc.

The plant can be slightly bluer in colour than San Pedro and can grow to a height of 3-6 metres. Echinopsis Peruvianus also grows fast, perhaps faster than San Pedro. Peruvianus often grows thicker than Pachanoi, but it cannot be confirmed that one is stronger than the other. Some sources claim that Peruvianus contains more mescaline than any of the Echinopsis species.

Echinopsis peruvianus is more potent than San Pedro. For a normal dose (equivalent to 200-400 milligrams mescaline) about 300-500 grams of fresh plant (30-50 grams dried) are needed.
