From Plantation to Powder: The Source Chain of Edabea's Kratom

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is one of the products where this traceability is most important: the concentration of alkaloids varies significantly depending on geographical origin, cultivation conditions, harvest timing, and drying and milling processes. The Plantation

Mitragyna speciosa is a tree from the Rubiaceae family that can reach between 15 and 30 meters in height under natural conditions. In cultivation, plantations keep the trees at more manageable heights to facilitate manual harvesting. The tree thrives in moist, well-drained soils of tropical regions, typically along riverbanks and in lowland areas of Southeast Asia.

The leaves are the only part of the plant that is traded in the kratom market. The concentration of alkaloids, especially mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, varies depending on leaf maturity, tree variety, and cultivation conditions. The Inflorescence of Mitragyna speciosa

The flowering of Mitragyna speciosa produces globular inflorescences that go through several clearly defined stages of development. The following image, taken directly from the plantation, documents the complete cycle on a single leaf:

In the plantation, flowering trees are typically excluded from leaf harvesting, as the plant directs some of its resources toward seed production. The optimal harvest timing is determined by leaf maturity, not by the flowering cycle.


The Manual Harvest

The harvesting of kratom is entirely manual. Workers select and collect the mature leaves one by one or branch by branch, placing them in traditional wicker baskets. This selective harvesting method is the only one compatible with obtaining homogeneous quality material: mechanized harvesting does not allow for the discrimination of leaf maturity.

The River Transport

The freshly harvested leaves are transported from the plantation by riverboats. The river is the main communication route in kratom-producing areas of Southeast Asia: plantations are typically located in areas that are difficult to access by road, where the river network acts as the main logistical infrastructure.

The Drying

After transport, the fresh leaves are spread in controlled drying facilities. The drying process is one of the critical factors that determine the final alkaloid profile of the product: temperature, duration, and ventilation conditions directly influence the concentration and relative proportions of the alkaloids present in the dried leaf.

The Industrial Processing

The dried leaves move to an industrial processing facility where they are ground and sifted to obtain the fine powder that reaches the end consumer. The facilities working with our supplier are equipped with stainless steel grinding and sifting equipment in a controlled environment.

The grinding degree determines the granulation of the final powder, which directly affects its behavior in use. Edabea works with standard fine granulation powder in all products in the catalog.


From Powder to Laboratory: Analytical Verification of the Batch

The traceability chain does not end at processing: all batches of kratom from Edabea undergo laboratory analysis before commercialization. Batch 22.885, currently in the catalog, was analyzed in October 2025 in a laboratory with ISO 17025 certification, using UHPLC-DAD (alkaloid quantification), ICP-MS (heavy metals), and GC-MS (residual solvents) techniques.
