Crested San Pedro
This curious cactus is a variety of the well-known San Pedro cactus, specifically the crested variety. Its scientific name is Trichocereus pachanoi cristata (synonym: Echinopsis pachanoi “cristata”), although it is also known as the Crested San Pedro, Monster Cactus, or Brain Cactus.
Only one in a thousand Trichocereus pachanoi will grow in a crested mutation.
Characteristics
The Trichocereus pachanoi cristata, or Brain Cactus, is an irregularly shaped cactus that tends to form crests. It has few spines, which are typically very small.
It tolerates periods of drought; conversely, excessive watering can damage the plant.
Lighting
The Trichocereus pachanoi cristata can be grown in full sun or partial shade. It can also be grown indoors as long as they are well-lit.
Temperature
The Trichocereus pachanoi cristata can tolerate temperatures close to 0 ºC, but it is recommended to keep it above 5 ºC.
Soil
Like any cactus, the Trichocereus pachanoi cristata requires a fertile and well-drained soil.
Watering
Water once a week during the hot seasons. During the rest of the year, water once a month, or skip watering if the ambient temperature is very low.
The Brain Cactus does not tolerate standing water. Remove any excess water that may remain in the pot's saucer.
Fertilization
During spring and summer, it is advisable to fertilize the soil of the Trichocereus pachanoi cristata, especially if it is in a pot. Add a diluted liquid fertilizer for cacti in the watering water every 30 days. Fertilization should be suspended during winter.
Propagation
The Trichocereus pachanoi cristata propagates through cuttings taken by dividing any crest. Allow the cut to scab over for at least 2 days in a cool, well-lit place, but protected from direct sunlight, and then proceed to plant it.
