Kratom

Mitragyna speciosa is a large tree in its native form. From the Rubiaceae family, it grows in south East Asia, in Indochina and in the floral regions of Malaysia. The leaves of the tree Mitragyna speciosa or Kratom have been used, traditionally, for its medicinal proprieties and are known as Kratom. The Dutch Pieter Korthals colonial botanist documented it officially for the first time. He gave it the name Mitragyna speciosa because of the Mitragyna korthals as for the stigmas in the first species looked like a bishop’s mitre. The Kratom is botanically related to the Corynanthe, Cinchona and Uncaria, and it shares some similar biochemical characteristics. The Mitragyna speciosa trees, in general, grow up to 9 metres and 4.5 metres wide, although, in the appropriate conditions they can reach the 12 metres in height. The stem is upright and branched. The leaves are dark green with an oval acuminated shape. The flowers are yellow and grow in racemes. A spherical head characterizes this genus, and during the flower-bud stage, the developing buttons are surrounded and completely covered by numerous bracteoles overlapping.

The leaves of Mitragyna speciosa fall constantly; therefore, they are frequently replaced. During the dry season the leaf drop is more substantial, and the new growth more frequent during the raining season. When growing out of its natural tropical habitat, the leaf fall of the Mitragyna speciosa happens with lower temperatures, around 4 degrees Celsius. The tree Mitragyna speciosa (Kratom) grows better in a wet, humid and fertile soil, with direct sunlight exposure, and an area sheltered from strong winds. Although we can frequently find Mitragyna speciosa in the same areas, some places have too many white vain trees, as other places have too many red vein trees. The tree Mitragyna speciosa has many alkaloids, including mitragyna (believed to be the primary active component), mitraphylline, and hydroxymitragynine (witch is presently the most probable candidate for the main active chemical substance in Mitragyna speciosa). However, the hydroxymitragynine and mitragyna are structurally related to tryptamines, yohimbine, their pharmacology is very different. Other active chemical substances in Mitragyna speciosa include raubasine and some other alkaloids.
