Kit Chocolate 100x100 mycelium
Psilocybe cubensis Chocolate 100% mycelium grow kit.
A variety with distinctive pigmentation among hallucinogenic mushrooms, considered one of the most recognisable strains within mushroom grow kits. A mutation of the B+ strain developed by cultivator Dave Wombat approximately 25 years ago, also known as "The Choco" or "Choco Red" for its dark tone.
Do not soak in water before initiating fruiting.
Chocolate 100% Mycelium Kit
The Chocolate 100% Mycelium Kit belongs to the main category of mushroom grow kits and is included in the hybrid strains subcategory.
This Psilocybe cubensis variety stands out among classic kits for its unusually dark pigmentation, similar to dark chocolate, resulting from a spontaneous mutation of the B+ strain isolated and stabilised through successive genetic selection.
Origin and development of the Chocolate strain
The Chocolate strain was developed by cultivator Dave Wombat from B+ spores. After years of cultivation without notable variations, Wombat identified a specimen with unusual dark pigmentation — a spontaneous mutation from the standard B+ phenotype. From that finding, he selected spores from the darkest specimens across successive generations to stabilise and intensify the trait.
Initially, the dark pigmentation was limited to the cap; the stem remained light in tone. Through continued selection, Wombat managed to extend the dark pigmentation to the stem as well, while also refining the fibrous texture of the cap — a feature that cracks as it grows, producing an appearance similar to hair-like fibres.
Morphology of the Chocolate strain
The distinctive morphological characteristics of this variety include:
Pigmentation: very dark tone, similar to dark chocolate, present in both cap and stem in fully developed specimens.
Cap texture: fibrous, with striations that crack as they grow, giving a characteristic appearance similar to hair-like fibres.
Cultivation vigour: robust growth, inherited from the parental B+ genetics, known for its ease of cultivation and consistency.
Growing the Chocolate kit
Cultivating the Chocolate kit follows the same process as the rest of the 100% mycelium kits in the Edabea catalogue: maintaining adequate humidity and temperature conditions, controlled passive ventilation, and strict sterility throughout the process to avoid contamination. Check our detailed cultivation instructions for the full step-by-step process.
Frequently asked questions about the Chocolate 100% Mycelium Kit
Where does the dark pigmentation of the Chocolate strain come from?
It is the result of a spontaneous mutation identified in the B+ strain by cultivator Dave Wombat, later isolated and stabilised through successive genetic selection of the darkest specimens in each generation.
Is the Chocolate strain genetically distinct from B+?
It is a variant of the same B+ genetic line, with the pigmentation mutation fixed through selection. It is not a different species — it remains Psilocybe cubensis — but a derived strain with a differentiated morphological phenotype.
Should the mushroom cake be soaked before fruiting?
No. This 100% mycelium kit should not be soaked in water before initiating fruiting.
What morphology do Chocolate strain mushrooms have?
Caps with dark pigmentation and fibrous texture that cracks as they grow, giving an appearance similar to hair-like fibres. In fully developed specimens, the dark pigmentation extends to the stem as well.
Is it legal to grow this kit?
Regulations vary by jurisdiction. This product is sold exclusively for collection, genetic conservation and mycological study purposes. It is the buyer's responsibility to verify the legislation applicable in their place of residence.
