Melatonin — product information

Melatonin is an indolic hormone primarily synthesized by the pineal gland from tryptophan, with serotonin as the immediate precursor. Available in a 1 g powder format, it features a neutral aromatic profile and dissolves easily in liquids.

What is melatonin?

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a hormone produced endogenously in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and plants. In humans, it is mainly synthesized by the pineal gland — a small structure of the diencephalon described by Descartes in the 17th century as "the seat of the soul" — in response to darkness, peaking in secretion between 2 AM and 4 AM.

It was first isolated and identified in 1958 by American dermatologist Aaron B. Lerner at Yale University, who named it melatonin for its ability to lighten the skin of amphibians by contracting melanocytes. Its role in regulating the circadian rhythm in humans was established decades later.

Melatonin is naturally present in some foods — walnuts, cherries, tomatoes, rice — although in very low concentrations. As a supplement, synthetic melatonin is chemically identical to the endogenously produced form.

Regulation in the European Union

In the European Union, melatonin is authorized as a food supplement at doses of up to 1 mg per serving, with health claims approved by EFSA related to reducing the time taken to fall asleep and alleviating jet lag effects. This product comes in a 1 g powder format — equivalent to 1,000 doses of 1 mg — and is marketed as research material, not as a food supplement with established dosing.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, in a sealed container. Melatonin is sensitive to degradation from exposure to light and heat. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between endogenous melatonin and synthetic melatonin?

Chemically, there is no difference — synthetic melatonin is structurally identical to what is produced by the pineal gland. The difference lies in the origin: endogenous is synthesized from tryptophan in the pineal gland; synthetic is produced through industrial chemical processes from different precursors.

Why is it available in powder form and not in capsules?

The powder format allows greater flexibility in handling the product for research purposes. 1 g of melatonin powder is equivalent to approximately 1,000 doses of 1 mg — the standard authorized dose as a food supplement in the EU — making it a reference format for research use.
