While the normal Trichocereus bridgesii grows with the typical columnar shape, this monstrous version has a short stem section that branches informally and forms a low, spiny hedge - with few spines and small columns. The part above the "hedge" transforms into a smooth, thornless cylinder, ending in a rounded end. And it is this unusual shape that makes this mutant so sought after. This version is slower growing than the normal Trichocereus bridgesii, but the mescaline levels are higher than those of the San Pedro cactus.

Bolivian Torch, including the "monster" version, contains mescaline (3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine), a psychoactive alkaloid with potent mind-altering effects. Users of mescaline claim to experience very strong visual effects, a completely altered and/or expanded awareness of themselves and the world around them, accompanied by feelings of euphoria and of being connected to mother nature. 0.3-0.4. grams of pure mescaline are more than enough for a "normal" trip, PURE, that is, not from plant matter. Consumption of the flesh of the mescaline cactus can and does cause severe vomiting. Shaman users see this as a positive thing, as a purification of the body from any influences that might affect the visionary journey experience.
